Synopsis
Never mix vodka & witchcraft. You know what happens? A nine year curse that almost kills the love of your life & destroys the town you live in. Here’s how it goes – Poor nineteen year old Vivienne is heartbroken. A summer love has now turned into a pity party in the bath. But her cousin Gwen has the bright idea to curse the boy to blame for this with a silly bath & body works candle & some bad luck about his hair & never having good foreplay. A few giggles later all seems to looking up. Fast forward nine years & said ex, Rhys Penhallow, shows up to town to celebrate the towns 100th anniversary. Cue all heck breaking loose. The man can’t even drive his car home his magic is so jacked. After a few run ins with Vivienne he’s got a sneaking suspicion that maybe she’s to blame. Come to find out that silly drunk fake curse was real & now he’s infused said curse into the town while trying to protect it. Now Vivienne & Rhys have to figure out how to break the curse & save everyone in town while also doging biting plastic skulls, capturing a ghost & trying not to fall in love. But all this time together only brings the magic back to life & makes the journey back to eachother one wild ride.
Break It Down
Story: ๐๐๐๐ – 4 Stars
This was a cutesy Halloween romcom. For what it was – it was a super fun book. The storyline was cute. There wasn’t a lot of character development or depth but it was a sweet second chance romance. I will admit I don’t read many witch books so the magic in it was fine for me. I’d imagine if you’re more into the occult this might not hit those buttons for you but I definitely enjoyed it. The side characters were quirky & cute. I really loved all of Gwen’s banter. I also thought the arc of Vivienne coming into her own as a witch was a nice intertwined story.

This book was breezy. I read it in half a day. It was a good forward moving story. It kept a nice pace & I never felt like it was dragging along or slow. The editing was well done & I enjoyed the dual POV. The wrap up was a little quick but it was cute so no real complaints.
Spice: ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ – 3 Flames
This was definitely spicier than a YA book or hallmark movie but it wasn’t a lot. It would be easy to read closed door style if you wanted. However, the spice we do get is delightful & well written. Sweet & sexy falling in love chemistry. Rhys & Vivi have a lot of sexual tension. Especially during the build up when they are denying their attraction. I very much enjoyed it.

This story was so sweet. I loved the cute witch Halloween vibe. I saved it to read in October for my spooky season TBR & it was perfect for that. The whole book was easy to read & the story was unique. For a kitschy romcom it was totally four stars. It reminded me a lot of the Halloweentown movies from the Disney Channel in the early 2000’s. Totally nostalgic. As long as you know this isn’t an “accurate” or detailed occult themed book I think it’s worth the read.
If you’re looking for a cute, Halloween vibe HEA story – this is the book. I read the Haunting Adeline duet right before this & I purposefully kept this for afterwards as a palette cleanser. It was perfect for that. Just an overall sweet, quirky & funny book. I know some people on bookstagram didn’t love this one. But as long as you go into it knowing it is more of a bewitched vibe than a coven vibe you’ll enjoy it. Erin’s writing is funny & kept me entertained the whole way through. It really would make a cute hallmark-esque movie. I’ll be reading the next book in this series The Kiss Curse next so check out my Review Index for more books by Erin Sterling in the near future. If you’re looking for more Halloween season books I have a post on my Spooky Season TBR!
